A collection of over 30 tried and tested, practical classroom strategies to energise students and increase classroom interaction. Written in easy to follow style, it is intended for all tertiary educators regardless of discipline. By adopting and adapting these processes lecturers can significantly improve student motivation, comprehension and performance, as well as their own enjoyment of the teaching and learning process. The strategies range from the simple to more complex research-based methods to help students develop better analytical questioning skills. Each strategy includes a summary, a description, lists of materials, time and venue requirements, stages, advantages, disadvantages, and further references. In-text icons throughout the book are designed for quick reference.
This is Australia’s first regional medical school with a specific focus on rural medical practice.
Richard began and completed medical training with the intention of becoming a rural doctor. He provided a form of procedural rural medical practice including rural general practice and hospital-based secondary care, mostly in Obstetrics. His move to academic life came after reflection on how medical graduates become and remain competent clinicians, and since then he has been involved in the development, implementation and evaluation of innovative models of rural health education and service delivery.

Richard Hays, MBBS, PhD, MD, Dip RACOG, FRACGP, FACRRM, is Professor of Medical Education at the School of Medicine, James Cook University. He began professional life as a rural procedural general practitioner, but after 10 years of full-time practice, he became aware of how little he knew about the teaching/learning process when he was asked to supervise GP Registrars. He developed a strong interest in how medical graduates learn to become competent practitioners and this led to his academic career.
Since then he has researched and published extensively in medical education, rural health and clinical practice. Over the last 15 years, he has been involved in most major developments in medical education within Australian general practice and rural medicine. In 1999, he lead the establishment of a new medical school at James Cook University, where primary care has played a major role in the curriculum. He has taught as Visiting Professor in both the USA and UK and from 2006, is working in the UK at Keele University helping a medical school develop a new curriculum. Throughout his career Richard has sought to find ways to make medical education more enjoyable and effective.
